For the past 17 days or so, I start my day by answering a question on Quora, and then I come to Medium to write something.
Today, I am breaking the flow. I am starting with Medium.
So I figured it would be a good idea to talk about the reason why I do answer questions on Quora.
I am not a know it all.
May feel that way sometimes, but I really hope that isn’t true. I just express my opinion on things, tell them as I see them, and explain the reasons why I think that might be the right way to look at things.
I am not presumptuous enough to believe I know your business better than you.
Yeah. I don’t feel that way. Good for the man who does, but I am quite happy being content with the knowledge that I still have a lot of room to grow.
My views, my experience, and the perspective I have gained because of my work and expertise on certain business functions. It is quite a strong possibility that they can help your business. But I would leave that on you to evaluate and if so — incorporate. I would provide you with all the right tools to do that, and as far as my words go — I would just offer my sincere advice. No ulterior motives, no hidden agendas.
I don’t actually expect anyone to follow my advice
And why should you? You don’t know me. You haven’t seen my work up close and personal. So there is no reason that you should. I am fine with that.
So why do I actually do that?
Because it makes me a better professional — Every. Single. Day.
Take this, for example.
There is a $250 award associated with the most insightful and ‘new’ answer.
- Was my answer new? I am not sure. Can’t say I went through all the answers. Stumbled on to the question just browsing through my feed.
- Is my answer insightful? I would certainly think so. 🙈
- 🤑Did I answer this for the $250? Most definitely not. I don’t care about that. For one thing, if I did, I would have certainly spent more time on that answer.
Because it helps me think.
What would I do if I were in his shoes?
In this particular case, the question would be — If I were to run a meal-kit delivery company, how would I go about it? What would be my long term strategy to growth and sustainability?
Now that is a perfect stimulus for your brain. Helps you look at things from a new perspective. You are no longer looking at everything through a glass window tinted in the shades of your business. It helps you explore new marketing avenues, different business strategies, partnerships, sales methods. You learn a lot. And you learn it all in ALMOST NO TIME, and FOR FREE.
That is why I answer questions on Quora. To keep myself on my toes. To sharpen my thought process. To look at things from fresher perspectives.
To get better.
Oh. And Medium? Well, that’s simple. I am hoping to learn how to write better.
